With
stations at the ski resorts of Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain, this
brigade faces some of the harshest terrain and weather of any fire
fighting group in Australia. Mount Hotham fire station is the highest
altitude fire station in Australia.
Formed
in 1997, taking over responsibility for the area from the Mt Hotham
Resort Management Board, the CFA later completed construction of
a second station at Dinner Plain in 1999 to cater for the substantial
development taking place. From humble beginnings, MHDP brigade has
developed into a vibrant and efficient team, ably demonstrated during
the Alpine bushfires of 2003.
Brigade
responsibilities cover the resorts of Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain
as well as the Hotham Airport through to the higher plains of Cobungra
Station.
The
team gratefully acknowledge the support given during these fires
by strike teams from all over Victoria, interstate and New Zealand.
Brigade
members are a mixture of permanent residents and seasonal staff
at Mt Hotham and mainly permanent residents at Dinner Plain. The
team is supplemented during winter by a full-time CFA Operations
Officer residing at the Hotham station.
Despite
sub-zero temperatures and often strong winds in winter, brigade
members train at least one night a week, essential to maintain skills
on the varied equipment employed.
Skills
brigade members ensure are current include driving and vehicle requirements,
structural fires, wildfire training, Breathing Apparatus, Gas Fire
suppression, hazardous materials and Search & Rescue to name
but a few.
